Attic Insulation Austin TX

Is your attic insulation low?  Do you have high energy bills?  How much pest poop is hiding in your attic? Are you irritated by uncomfortable rooms?  Is your home making you sick?

Stellrr can transform your home into a comfortable, energy-efficient, and healthy place for your family to enjoy life! The first step is to…

Changing Lives, Cleansing Homes

Uncover the Hidden Problems Impacting Your $$$ and Health

Is your home more than 10 years old?  Aging insulation loses its effective R-value when it gets dirty, moved around, or compressed. Fiberglass or cellulose insulation over 10 years old is likely only 20-40% of today’s R-49 code minimum.

Ignoring attic insulation problems is a costly mistake. Sub-par attics require more expensive: HVAC units, pest control, replacement windows, solar panels, and much more! Check this out…

What Is Happening

The 4 Major Attic PROBLEMS

1. Vented Attics Add A New Layer Of Toxins To Your Home Each Year

Like a car that has never been washed or rained on. Cedar pollen, dust, ragweed, mold & airborne toxins. If the home is 20 years old, it has 20 layers of toxins burrowed in the attic floor insulation. Toxins enter the attic through vents in the soffit, gable & roof.

2. Insect & Pest Damage Hides In The "Carpet Of The Attic"

Homes have had or will have pest issues in time. Pest damage is hidden in insulation due to tunneling. Like replacing the carpet in a house, the carpet of the attic (floor insulation) needs replacing.

3. Your Attic Is Like The Inside Of Your Car Sitting In The Summer Sun

Hot attic air pushes itself into your living space. Indoor air is 2-5x more contaminated than outdoor air.* Home air leaks equal to a 2ft x 2ft hole in the ceiling.* Attic air enters the home via: HVAC registers, can lights, plumbing penetrations, electric outlets, and more.

4. Air You Paid To Cool Is Re-Heated In The Ductwork & Leaks Into The Attic

Uncontrolled ductwork wastes $0.30 of every $1 spent on heating & cooling the home.

How to Fix It

Options to Fix Your Attic

1. Install Aluminum Foil Radiant Barrier

Slight reduction in radiant heat (1 of 3 types of heat). Creates a more attractive place for pests & insects The install process tramples (destroys) existing insulation. Foil is easily damaged. A temporary solution.

2. Add Insulation Layer On Top Of Existing

Hides problems in the building assembly, electrical, plumbing, ventilation, drywall, etc. Any future remodel, wiring, or plumbing work will trample the attic floor insulation. Traps existing & future toxins. Amplifies the intensity of toxins coming inside the home since it can't escape.

3. Remove "Carpet" & Re-Blow New Carpet

Insulating without air sealing is Mal-practice. Allergens will collect on new "carpet". No way to clean it. In 5-10 years you need to fix it all again. Doesn't address environment for the ductwork - still hot.

4. Cleanse The Attic & Control The Space

Toxic carpet insulation is removed. Allergens can't enter attic when properly sealed. Easy visual inspection & management for pests. Fixes ductwork temperatures & air sealing issues. No air loss or heat gain. Permanent solution when done right. Cleansing solves each problem with options 1, 2 & 3.

5 PRICE Ingredients of the Space Age Cleanse Recipe

The essential ingredients that many insulation contractors “forget” to estimate because they’re trying to win based on having the lowest price.

1. Energy Efficiency ($2,500 – $4,100)

This ingredient to the system does all the heavy lifting for making your home comfortable and efficient. This is installing the insulation that creates the thermal and air boundary in your attic. Most importantly, this is about moving your air ductwork from a 135* enviroment into a semi-conditioned place that is 5-8* different from the temperature inside your home.

2. Indoor Air Quality ($1,750 – $2,600)

A pre-requisite to encapsulating an attic is to remove all existing insulation from the attic floor. This means everything nested in your attic insulation is gone as well, all the allergens, feces, and urine. By removing the old, and sanitizing, a fresh clean, healthy enviroment is created. The old allergens that drifted into the indoor air are gone. This dramatically improves indoor air quality for all seasons of the year.

3. Moisture Management ($1,850 – $2,750)

When the attic is encapsulated, you can now regulate the humidity. “Seal it tight, ventilate it right.” As a home becomes more efficient the HVAC won’t run as much, which means less humidity is removed from the air in the more moderate temperature months. SaniDry is recommended in every Austin area attic to help manage humidity not only in the attic, but in the crawlspace in the home below as well. Secondly. all bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans must be ducted outside. If they are currently dumping moist air into the attic, this is a problem we must address as well.

4. Combustion Ventilation ($0 – $1,650)

If your home uses a gas or propane fueled HVAC or Water Heater (WH), we must properly address the combustion requirements. Most HVAC and WH units use the attic for make-up and exhaust air. This is the case for interior closet placed units as well as attic placed units. We create a ventilation system so we can seal the building envelope, while still supplying the required ventilation to the unit. Ventilation allows the unit to function properly, and avoid backdrafting carbon monoxide.

5. Fire Safety Protection ($1,250 – $2,300)

When installing spray foam (a plastic material) in the home, there are fire safety codes that must be followed. If your attic is more than 30-inches tall and 30-square feet, then an Ignition Barrier is required by building code. If the attic meets other qualifications, a Thermal Barrier is required. We install an intumescent coating to the spray foam. The Ignition Barrier (IB) and Thermal Barrier (TB) coating expands up to 2,000% when it comes into contact with a flame. An IB gives you 5-minutes of protection, while a TB gives you 15-minutes of protection. We also install No-Burn Flue Wraps to protect and separate the spray foam from the hot metal pipes (chimney, flue, ventahood).

Earlier this year, my wife and I hired Stellrr to remove all the spray-in [loose fill fiberglass] insulation from our attic and come back in with deck foam spray. Our goal was to resolve an issue with condensation that formed on the 1959 metal ductwork which pooled and created leaks in our ceiling. Our attic is now approximately 10 degrees warmer than the interior of the home.  It's now summer with temps hitting 100 degrees in central Texas and we could not be happier.

The Stellrr team did a stellar job with the install spray foam insulation in our attic. I had measured temperatures on the attic side of the metal roof to be over 130 degrees! I just checked again, and now it's 75 degrees without air conditioning it! All of my questions were answered in detail and the job went without a hitch. The temperature in the house is much more stable because of the air barrier. The HVAC comes on much less frequently...

Stellrr did an amazing job on insulating my completely gutted "A" Frame [cathedral ceiling] house. I had some special requests and they didn't complain, the just foamed it up. After the remodel the electricity bills are 1/2 of what they used to be. Also it is so quiet, I can't even hear it raining on the roof [because of the spray foam encapsulated attic and roof spray foam insulation in Austin]. The temperature stays very steady and the whole house is always comfortable.

FAQ

Questions on Attic Insulation Austin

According to statistics from EPA's Energy Star Association, energy bills can be cut by 30-50% with a properly sealed building envelope versus a vented one. The initial cost of the spray insulation should be seen as an investment as it will pay for itself over time.

Absolutely! The biggest expense when converting an attic would be to install closed cell foam instead of open cell foam. In northern climate zones closed cell is required. However, in central Texas open cell is the primary foam. Using open cell drops the cost of foam by 1/2.   Other than this item, what we include in our proposals is what is required to do the job right. And it is best to do it right, or not do it at all.

The price depends on the size of the attic, scope of work required to do it right, and the difficulty of the work. We have fixed pricing and do not charge more for nicer parts of town. Everyone gets the same rate. With that said, you can see the 3 main project types pricing above.

Many people ask “How much attic insulation is enough? How much R-value should I have?”

Most attic insulation is deficient. Homes are under-insulated according to the current IECC and City of Austin building code requirements. Why?

Before the year 2000, there were NO energy codes that required minimums for insulation.

Plus, even a new home can be uncomfortable or have damaged insulation. Questions? Call 512-520-0044!

The problem is often bigger than simply the amount of insulation in the attic.

What is an easy way to know if you need new insulation? If you can see the joists in your attic floor, then your own home is under-insulated.

You want to have at least an R-49 (COA code went from R-38 up to R-49 in 2021). BUT, many homes are still uncomfortable even with the proper R-value on the floor.

We believe attics must be air sealed, before insulating. So our process is very different than most contractors who just “Put Lipstick on a Pig” and don’t fix comfort or energy savings problems.

  1. Here Stellrr removed the soiled attic insulation near Austin.
  2. Air sealed the penetrations and leaky cracks.
  3. Encapsulated the HVAC system air ducts to ensure your air conditioning is delivered at the perfect temperature.
  4. Lastly, blew in Energy Star highly recommended level of R-60 All Boric Cellulose attic insulation. It was a great job!austin attic insulation air seal and blown insulation install

Short answer is, the entire attic floor should be covered with insulation. If you are using spray polyurethane foam, then we highly recommend the attic ceiling (roof deck) be sprayed. Foam does great work as a radiant barrier. If you have vaulted ceilings, or multiple ceiling heights, then insulation must be stuck to the back of the drywall. We often see hot spots in one room where there is a raised ceiling. Fiberglass batt insulation is often stuffed up against the raised ceiling wall, and falls down (becoming useless) over time.

Batt insulation in attics is a problem building assembly.

It is more costly to remove insulation than it is to simply add more on top of the existing insulation. Before learning how to insulate an attic in Texas, you need to know about removal. Here are a few reasons why you would want existing radiant barrier and insulation removed:

  • Is someone living in the building allergic to the insulation material installed?
  • Does someone in the building have a sensitivity to outside allergens coming into the Austin home via the vented envelope?
  • Is there excessive dust, dust mites, and other things filtering into the home via the attic?
  • Have animals nested and left feces behind that is venting into your air space?
  • Do you have mold or too much moisture in your attic?
  • Do you have asbestos in your old attic insulation?

When you remove the insulation, you can hire the insulation installation crew to air-seal the attic floor if you are replacing the insulation with another blown or batt material. If you are creating a closed envelope with closed cell foam or open cell foam, you can then remove nasty old insulation and create storage space across your attic. Questions? Call 512-520-0044!

The bottom line is that, insulating an attic, without air sealing is Mal-practice!

The cost ranges widely depending on whether you have fiberglass, cellulose or spray foam installed. However, to FIX IT RIGHT, we are often seeing the costbeing $7,000 – $14,000 per 1,000 sq ft of attic.

Now if you want to “Put Lipstick On A Pig” and not fix anything, the material costs of blowing more attic insulation can be as low as $2,000 per 1,000 sq ft of attic. If you want to save money on air conditioning and cooling costs with home insulation, do it right. It’s not as simple as adding a radiant barrier. Get a free estimate from Stellrr. We will look at your attic and crawlspace insulation.

Sure. You could. But each person who has tried DIYing it, has told us what a mistake it was. It is so hot in attics that it takes weeks for our men to acclimate to it. Plus you really need the right equipment. We use 23 horse power vacuums and blow it into large dumpsters. People who DIY have used shop vacs. The difference is 1,000 sq ft per day of removal versus 100 sq ft per day DIY.

Stellrr accepts payment via cash, card, check, and easy financing. On our financing you can pay a low monthly payment or get the loan and pay no interest. Your Solutions Specialist can review the options with you in person.

It states that you will save the cost to retrofit your home within 10 years, or we will REFUND YOU THE DIFFERENCE. For more details, check out the Cost of Not Hiring Stellrr FAQ page.

Since spray foam insulation is applied to the roof-decking and rafters on the attic ceiling, the R-value required is only R-25 of open cell foam. Why? For starters, foam is a significantly better performing product, and it is a barrier for all 3-types of heat transfer. Plus, with spray insulation, you don’t need an extra radiant barrier because foam is a radiant barrier.

Why does foam only require R-25 to meet code requirements when the City of Austin requires R-49 for blown insulation? The difference is this: R-49 is the prescriptive code. Meaning, how the code was written. But, the City recognizes that R-25 preforms equal to or better than the R-49 prescribed code. Prescriptive vs Performance code.

This is a very common question. The fact is that it depends on how you plan to use the building. If you are a production builder and just want to meet code requirements while building the cheapest product, then I have one answer. However, if you are the one who is going to own the building for at least 3-years and pay utility bill, then there is a significantly different and better option.

Chimney Wrap with All Boric Cellulose

The best time to have planted a tree was 30 years ago. The next best time is today. Likewise, it would be great to have fixed the problem building assembly in your attic when it was cheaper. But attic insulation costs are only going up.

You can continue to pay to waste energy and be uncomfortable. Or you can fix things and be saving money down the road. Plus, more importantly, you will be creating a healthier, safer environment for your family to have the best experience.

The longer you wait, the more expensive it will be to fix your attic insulation.

Your best bet is to have a professional give you an estimate. Most of the time with Austin insulation, it is more expensive to install it yourself than it is to hire a pro to help lower your electric bill. Very counterintuitive. Hire Stellrr. We are extremely professional. Will do an excellent job. You will have a great experience. We are great roof insulation installers.

If you are looking to install insulation yourself or hire out attic insulation installation, then there are some things you’ll want to consider. You see installing insulation is not just blowing in some fiberglass into the attic. In fact proper insulation installation is not easy. Blown in insulation is only a small part of the whole picture to reduce energy costs. Properly iinsulated homes require a lot more than just insulation. Insulation only blocks one of the three types of heat. The most important type of heat to stop is convective heat, which is air leakage. Without proper air sealing and radiant barrier, you won’t get significant savings when you are adding insulation products to the attic. Frankly if you want results, insulation is not a diy project.
